ClassicSciFi Films Restored and in Full Color!

Yes that's a Red Pontiac from Night of the Living Dead Here at ClassicSciFi.Com we will soon be launching a new online store. The store will offer some fantastic items for our sci-fi, horror, and fantasy film aficionados. These include our signature logo t-shirts, and a spectacular collection of colorized DVDs from our friends at Legend Films. While colorization is certainly a controversial technique, Legend Films is applying this powerful in a way that is not exploitive but highly respectful of the original content. Like a film preservation project, they digitally enhance and remaster the original black and white creating a breathtaking new master which they then colorize. The end product has a new remixed 5.1 surround sound audio track and many extras including a hilarious commentary track by Mike Nelson of MSTK fame.

Legend has released four of our favorite genre classics. Night of the Living Dead, House on Haunted Hill, Carnival of Souls, and Plan 9 from Outer Space. Legend Films Philosophy

Colorization has been, and will likely to be, a controversial subject. Since we are the leaders in restoration and colorization technology, we want to express our philosophy on the subject. Legend Films has developed a proprietary new technology that allows us to color films beautifully and at high definition. Our goal is to bring new life and energy to numerous vintage movies that are becoming lost in today?s world. Of course, some films are perfect the way they are and should never be put in color. Some classic films like Casablanca and Citizen Kane were artistically shot in black and white and will always have an audience.

However many films such as certain vintage holiday movies, family dramas, war- time epics, westerns and comedies are becoming too dated for today?s audiences who are accustomed to everything in color. They are not being watched, and in many cases the studios are not releasing them and the underlying elements are not being preserved or restored. Color can breathe new life into these films; make them more visually interesting, and more accessible to younger generations.

Black and White vs. Color

Before 1935 there were no true color films as we know them today. In the 1930?s through the mid 60?s, many films were shot in black and white simply for budgetary reasons. Making most pictures in black and white was more profitable because of their significantly lower costs. David O. Selznick changed his mind many times before finally deciding to shoot Gone With the Wind in color. He estimated it cost him an extra $500,000 (in 1939 dollars) for the extra cameramen, developing, printing, and lighting necessary to shoot in color. Fortunately for all of us, he chose to, but not all filmmakers had that luxury.

Restoration and Colorization

At Legend Films, we take great care in the work we do. We perform painstaking research into the actual colors used in films. We locate color photographs of costumes and sets, and research each design element so that we come as close as possible to the actual colors the director was seeing at the time. Colorization does not affect the underlying black-and-white levels. Shadows and highlights are not altered in any manner but are colored accurately and automatically to match the effect as if the film were originally shot in color. Legend Films? new proprietary photo-real color process when seen in high definition (rather than on a web site), produces truly stunning results.

We also take great care in working with the underlying film elements. We use a High Definition telecine system for unparalleled digital transfer from the original negatives and/or prints. All colorized feature movies from Legend Films go through a complete, full restoration that includes dust and scratch removal, as well as the replacement of bad, torn or spliced footage. The audio is enhanced, and in many cases we add a conservative 5.1 surround track for added value along with the original mono. Each DVD we produce includes BOTH the colorized version and the restored black-and-white version on the same disk. Whenever possible, we involve any major talent connected to the film including actors, directors, etc. who are still living in both the creative aspect of the colorization process as well as added-value commentary on the making of the feature film.

Film Preservation

Currently, it is not a priority for the major studios to restore their deep film catalogs. Colorization is a viable and valuable way to subsidize the restoration and preservation of our American Film Heritage. We do NOT touch the original negative, and all restoration, while at high definition and film resolution, is done digitally so that new prints and negatives can be created.

The Legend Films Commitment

Legend Films is dedicated to producing the best possible product at the highest resolution and quality, while at the same time preserving and enhancing the original black-and-white elements for the enjoyment of movie fans everywhere.
